The Professional Conduct Committee consists of at least 3 persons appointed by SASLPA council and is responsible for investigation of complaints. The committee interviews and collects statements from the person making the complaint and from the member against whom the complaint has been registered. Other people with direct involvement may also be interviewed. The Professional Conduct Committee collects the statements, documents or other materials that are pertinent to the investigation. When the investigation is complete the Professional Conduct Committee determines if there is sufficient evidence and cause to refer the case on to the Discipline Committee for a hearing.
The Discipline Committee consists of 5 appointed members and acts independently from the Professional Conduct Committee. It arranges for a hearing at which both parties are able to state their cases. Legal representation is not required for the hearing but may be advisable if warranted by the nature of the complaint. The members of the Discipline Committee hear the evidence presented and decide if professional misconduct has occurred and, if so, what penalty is appropriate. Serious infractions may result in fines or a loss of license and may restrict the professional’s ability to work in Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada. Other penalties are determined according to the nature of the misconduct.
